How do I track time with background location on iPhone?

Why While Using permission breaks background tracking

iOS offers three location permission levels: Never, While Using the App, and Always. While Using only grants location access when the app is visible on screen or actively in use. The moment you lock your phone or switch apps, iOS suspends location updates.

For tradespeople visiting multiple sites per day, While Using is not practical. You would need to keep the app open and the screen on all day.

Setting Always permission on iPhone

Open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services. Scroll to your time tracking app, tap it, and choose Always. iOS will show a confirmation dialog explaining that the app can access your location even when not in use.

After granting Always permission, your tracker runs in the background. It detects when you start driving, when you arrive at a jobsite, and when you leave.

Battery impact and motion detection

Background GPS does use battery. When your phone is stationary at a jobsite, the system reduces GPS polling frequency. When motion sensors detect movement, GPS resumes tracking to capture the trip.

GPS pauses after about five minutes without movement. Motion detection stays active. Actual battery use depends on your phone, signal strength, and travel patterns.

How TradesTimer handles iOS background tracking

TradesTimer requests Always location permission on first launch. Once granted, the app registers a background location service with iOS. Throughout the day, iOS delivers location updates to TradesTimer even when the app is closed, the screen is locked, or you are using other apps.

The app processes these updates on device, grouping location readings into stops and trips. At the end of the day, your timeline is already built. You open the app, label any unnamed stops, flag billable work, and export rounded hours as text or CSV.

What background tracking cannot do

If you manually disable location services in Control Center or airplane mode, tracking stops. If your phone dies, tracking stops. If you uninstall the app, all locally stored data is erased. That is an iOS policy.

Also, iOS restricts background execution when your phone is in Low Power Mode. The system may defer or batch location updates, causing timeline gaps. If you rely on GPS tracking for billing, avoid Low Power Mode during work hours.

The founder’s experience

I worked in framing, fencing, roofing, siding, decks, concrete, drywall, and painting. I kept dates and hours in notebooks while working trades. Later, I managed purchase orders, invoicing, and time tracking in the back office of an electrical contractor.

Missing or incorrect time entries made billing harder. I built TradesTimer to record stops and trips automatically, so tradespeople can review visits before preparing invoices. The app processes location readings on device and stores your timeline locally. Always location permission tells iOS the app needs location data even when the user is not actively looking at it.

When iOS shows you the periodic notification that TradesTimer has been using your location, you can open the app and verify every recorded stop is a real jobsite. History is stored on your phone. You choose where to share exports.

FAQ

Will iOS notify me about an app using background location?

Yes. iOS periodically shows a notification reminding you that an app is using your location in the background, and offers a map snippet of recent activity. This is a system level privacy feature. You can dismiss the notification or review your timeline in the app to verify the tracking is working.

Does background location work overnight if I leave the app running?

Yes, as long as Always permission is granted. If you park your truck at home and leave your phone charging, the app will detect you are stationary and pause GPS. If you drive somewhere early the next morning, motion detection resumes tracking automatically.

Can I turn off background tracking temporarily without uninstalling?

Yes. In iOS Settings, open Location Services and switch the app permission from Always to Never. The app will stop recording new trips and stops, but your existing timeline data remains on the device. Switch back to Always when you want to resume tracking.

What happens if I force quit the app from the app switcher?

Background location may stop until the next time iOS wakes the app, usually triggered by significant location change. To help tracking continue, avoid force quitting your time tracker unless you are troubleshooting a problem. Simply locking your phone or switching apps is fine.
